| How to Choose a Winter Tent Site |
When choosing a winter tent site, look for an area that's free of winter hazards and will provide adequate shelter. |
| Steps: |
| 1. Look up and make certain there are no dangerous avalanche slopes looming over the sight. Also avoid snow-covered tree limbs that will shed their snow on your tent in a high wind. |
2. Look for a low hedge of bushes or rocks that will offer shelter without threatening to dump snow from above. |
3. Consider a clearing with lots of snow where you can build a snow wall (or "berm") for shelter. |
| 4. Avoid pitching your tent in a canyon or windy valley where cold will be pervasive. |
5. Pitch your tent so that its "back" is to the wind. Otherwise snow may pile up at the entrance. |
